Critical Care

The Critical Care staff at Nashville General Hospital focuses exclusively on providing high level medical care to patients facing potentially life-threatening conditions. Our highly-trained staff is committed to providing an environment that fosters excellence through teamwork, organizational unity and open communication.

The Critical Care Unit has 22 beds, including four negative pressure rooms, and one room equipped for hemodialysis. We specialize in providing special attention for each ill patient by assigning no more than two patients to each nursing professional.

Special procedures include:

  • Arterial lines
  • Cardioversion
  • Esophageal balloons
  • External pacing
  • Intubation
  • Peritoneal dialysis
  • Swan Ganz catheter
  • Thrombolytic administration
  • Transvenous pacing.

The licensed staff receives specialized training including ACLS certification, arrhythmia recognition and interpretation skills, BLS certification, cardioversion competencies, critical care course completion, hemodynamic skills competency, peritoneal dialysis skills and hemodialysis administration, post anesthesia, thrombolytic administration expertise, transthoracic (external pacing) and transvenous pacing training.
